Brendon Grimshaw purchased the island for £8,000 in 1962[1] and set about making the island habitable. He did this with the help of one other man, Rene Antoine Lafortune. They operate the island as a nature reserve, charging visitors €12 to come ashore, roam the island, dine at the “Jolly Roger” restaurant and relax on the beach. Grimshaw and his friend planted sixteen-thousand trees, built 4,8 kilometers of nature paths, and brought and bred giant land tortoises, creating an island of incredible beauty now worth 34 million Euros. Apart from a wide variety of plant and bird life, the island is home to over 100 land tortoises. The eldest, Desmond, is 76 years old according to Grimshaw. He named the tortoise after his godson.

Das nenne ich mal Walden…völlig einsam auf einer Insel vor Island zu leben. Diese Insel hier heißt Elliðaey und liegt 144 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel. Darauf steht genau ein Haus…und das wurde Björk geschenkt mit dem Grund Island wieder auf die kulturelle Landkarte der Welt gesetzt zuhaben. Was würde ich dafür geben da mal zu leben…

Wie mich das Fernweh packt. Weit weg in die Natur möchte ich. Auch wenn Natur nur alte Backsteine bedeutet. Ich will jeden Stein umdrehen und Menschen auf der ganzen Welt nur fast kennenlernen. Ich bin doch so schüchtern und vielleicht als weltfremd und unsozial zu bezeichnen. Ich will hunderte Fotos schießen. Fotos die nur in meinen Träumen stattfinden. Ich würde doch nie jemanden nach seinen Portrait bitten. Meine Erlebnisse würde ich in Notizbüchern festhalten, die ich mich nie trauen würde zu schreiben.

Eucalyptus deglupta is a tall tree, commonly known as the Rainbow Eucalyptus, the Mindanao Gum, or the Rainbow Gum. It is the only Eucalyptus species found naturally in the Northern Hemisphere. Its natural distribution spans New Britain, New Guinea, Ceram, Sulawesi and Mindanao. Now, this tree is cultivated widely around the world, mainly for pulpwood used in making paper. It is the dominant species used for pulpwood plantations in the Philippines.
This tree is also grown for ornamental purposes, due to the showy multi-coloured streaks that cover the trunk. Patches of outer bark are shed annually at different times, showing the bright-green inner bark. This then darkens and matures to give blue, purple, orange and then maroon tones.
